Attempting to visualise 500,000 lifeless, the monstrous U.S. pandemic toll

A 12 months in the past, covid-19 had killed only a handful of individuals in the US. Now, the pandemic’s official demise toll equals the dimensions of a significant metropolis, greater than the inhabitants of Kansas Metropolis, Mo., and almost as many as Atlanta or Sacramento.
It may be exhausting to understand the enormity — virtually half 1,000,000 individuals, gone. What if we imagined them touring as one group? Or killed in motion? Or all buried collectively?
If 500,000 passengers traveled bus …
A median motor coach — the sort of bus you’d take from one metropolis to a different — holds 50 individuals. Transporting solely the quantity of people that died final month would require dozens of buses.
